N is for New Ways

This month I'm participating in the A-Z Blogging Challenge. The theme I'm going with this year is writing humor. Follow along to learn more about the different ways to make your fiction, articles or blog posts humorous.

Find new, different, wacky and original ways to say the same old things. Don't go for the first descriptions that come to your mind like big, tall, skinny, happy or sad.

Instead of saying his breath stunk, say it smelled as if he gargled with toilet water. From a gas station bathroom.

Instead of saying she was having a bad hair day, say her hair looked like a squirrel, a pack rat and a capybara became roomates. And decided to build a three story condo nest in her hair.

Instead of saying he was a large man, say his belly looked like it could double as the bass drum in the 4th of July parade.

Push yourself! Try harder! Go crazy!

Do you struggle to find new ways to say things? Or do the crazy ideas come easily to you?

  1. I work towards this every time I write. No cliches, seeing something from my MC's POV, and then in revisions I still catch so much that I have to change into my MC's frame of reference. Being original is essential to being funny.

    Great post!

  3. I try to do this with my books, but sometimes I'm the only one who laughs. I swear it was funny in my head!

  5. These made me chuckle! I don't think I'm a natural comedian, but I'm certainly always looking for intriguing and original descriptions!
