G is for Genre

This month I'm participating in the A-Z Blogging Challenge. The theme I'm going with this year is writing humor. Follow along to learn more about the different ways to make your fiction, articles or blog posts humorous. 

Knowing what genre your writing falls into is imporant for many reasons. One of those is so you know who your audience is. 

Knowing your audience lets you decide whether jokes involving words like boogers and tooting are funny. Or if your work needs a different kind of humor altogether. Like, something involving teenage behavior. Or maybe, it's more for adults and involves office dynamics and the dramas of parenthood.    

A friend recently read a chapter of my WIP and was completely grossed out by the copious amount of description involving snot. 

See, I have these creatures whose noses are constantly dripping rivers of slimey yellow snot. I love writing the description, how it puddles above their lips and they lick it away or wipe their hands through it, stringing the snot through the air. 

I'm writing a fantasy middle grade. 

For boys. 

And bathroom humor is king. Anything involving bodily odors or even better ...body sounds is awesome. And thick streams of snot? I think my intended audience will lick it up, too. 

But would it be a good fit for, say, women's literary fiction? Or how about a political satire? Um...probably not.
